2019 Practicum

The VASA Practicum provides a rare opportunity for healthcare professionals to have “hands-on” experience with surgical and interventional procedures for creating & maintaining vascular access for hemodialysis.

The program will allow participants to:

Observe and perform vascular access procedures in a live animal laboratory
Receive expert instruction in surgical and interventional hemodialysis access procedures
Attend didactic presentations, workshops, and one-on-one discussions led by nationally recognized faculty
Gain experience using ultrasound for evaluation of hemodialysis fistulas and grafts

This practicum is designed for all transplant, vascular and general surgeons, nephrologists, interventional radiologists, nurses, and dialysis technicians who are interested in the management of vascular access.

08:00 AM - 10:00 AM SESSION I	Live cases transmitted from Orangeburg and the Houston Methodist ORs with panel discussion Dialysis access surgery and interventions with panelists from both surgical and interventional backgrounds to discuss Percutaneous AVF instruction and deployment in a model Learn patient selection, do ultrasounds to evaluate eligibility and prediction of success, and deploy both devices PD placement, both percutaneous and laparascopic Experts on hand to demonstrate best techniques for success Percutaneous interventions in pig models with different grafts, HeRO grafts Experts on hand to demonstrate best techniques for success Anatomic exposures on a cadaver Review the anatomy pertinent to dialysis i.e. perforator anatomy, cutaneous nerves that cause symptoms, central venous structures with rib and clavicle removal, femoral fistula dissection, and more. HeRO station Learn HeRO placement techniques and tips from experts Live patient evaluations with examination and US interrogation Most patient issues can be solved simply by a focused history, exam, and bedside Ultrasound. Not every aneurysm needs to be repaired, not every fistula needs to be “perfect”, and not all tingly fingers need a procedure. Come evaluate patients and discuss with the faculty.
